A Short Story Postscript

Tales of an Accidental Spectator

On January 23, 2008, my wife casually announced at our dinner table in California that her long time employer was a New York Giants season ticket holder. He would be unable to take advantage of an opportunity to attend Super Bowl XLII. Ten frantic days later, I would become an "accidental spectator" at one of the most anticipated, stunning, and historic games in the annals of championship sports.

With the timely cross country assistance of a relative, we navigated the NFL Super Bowl ticket lottery process – a system that remarkably manages to keep coveted seats relatively accessible to loyal fans. While hunting down an elusive third ticket to the Big Game, I stumbled into the shady underworld of internet fraud. I tracked the ruthless real time auction conducted through the mostly legitimate, but less than transparent, resale market.

I found emotional buyers and calculating sellers converging to form a microcosm of the ailing American Dream. I discovered generational legacies in the stands and strange coincidences on the field. Making the Big Game examines the deep-seated and near spiritual roots of our national passion for sport and spectacle through the increasingly sophisticated lens of the spectator.

Chapter I - "MARKING THE SPOT" - The perfect Dolphins, the pathetic "Iggles", and why Robert Irsay's 1984 midnight express out of Baltimore to relocate the Colts triggers a traumatic childhood memory.
Chapter II - "A HOME GAME IS NEVER FAR AWAY" - A water cooler moment with Rush Limbaugh and Donovan McNabb plus what my father-in-law was doing while flower children dropped acid in Golden Gate Park.
Chapter III - "FOOTLOOSE" - Where is a "Creator of Marketing Magic" went you need one?  If the economy is cooling off, it's time to go skiing!
Chapter IV - "FAMILY MEETING" - I need you to go to the Meadowlands to freeze your ass off so I can go to the Super Bowl. Taking legal custody of a Giant Legacy.
Chapter V - "TRICK PLAYS" - Obviously, we need a safe way to complete the deal so we can both get what we are after. I met a hedge fund manager and a web developer on the way to the big game and they have great seats.
CHAPTER VI - "FESTIVAL IN THE DESERT" - Laying odds that tens of thousands of screaming people in Black Rock Desert and the Valley of the Sun share more than meets the eye.
CHAPTER VII - "SUPER SATURDAY" - A laptop, a phone book, and an honest broker restore faith in the art of the deal.  Glendale has the game but Tempe has the party.  How many Senators does it take to change a channel?
CHAPTER VIII - "PHOENIX RISING" - A cabbie navigates the Valley Metro bus system.  College bowl quiz show finale:  For 150 million dollars, name that stadium.  Accommodating the paparazzi at the beer stand.
Chapter IX - "TRUE GIANTS AND PATRIOTS" - An armchair quarterback review for those who call ballplayers "warriors" and label Sunday's matchup a "battle".  Making a home town game bigger with the stroke of a pen.
Chapter X - "LIVING UP TO THE BILLING" - Why did my neighbors leave Mardi Gras, hitch a ride on a private jet, and spring big for a 50th birthday?  Because it's not just another game!
Chapter XI - "NOBODY IS PERFECT" - Can you hear me now?  Who says no one remembers second place?  Winning ugly with David Tyree and Garo Yepremian.  My house is bigger than your house.
